COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
CLEANER, VACUUM, ELECTRIC
(HOUSEHOLD/COMMERCIAL)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use
of this Commercial Item Description (CID) for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE.
1.1 Scope. This CID covers electric motor-powered canister, upright, and
combination vacuum cleaners for household and commercial use for dry pick up
only. The cleaners shall be designed to operate on a single phase power source
of either120 volts ac, 60 Hz, or 220 volts ac, 50 Hz as specified (see 7.2).
2. CLASSIFICATION
2.1 Classification. The vacuum cleaners shall be of the following types,
classes, and sizes (see 7.2).
Type I- Canister
Class A- Household.
Class B- Commercial.
Type II- Upright.
Class A- Household.
Class B- Small Commercial.
Class C- Large Commercial.
Size 1- 12 inch (304 mm) minimum width agitator.
Size 2- 16 inch (406 mm) minimum width agitator.
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS.
3.1 Standard Commercial Product. The vacuum cleaner shall be the
manufacturer’s standard commercial product except for any changes necessary for
compliance with this CID.
3.2 UL conformance. Vacuum cleaners shall meet the applicable
requirements of 1017. Evidence of conformance with UL standards shall be UL
label or listing mark, or a certified test report (based on tests conducted
within the past two years) from an independent testing laboratory acceptable to
the Government, indicating the vacuum cleaner has passed oil applicable tests.
3.3 General. Each cleaner shall be complete, lubricated, and ready to
operate (minor assembly is permitted). The design shall be simple in
construction, shall permit easy accessibility to component parts for cleaning,
inspection, adjustment, or replacement, and shall provide reliable operation.
Similar component parts and assemblies of identical model number cleaners shall
be fully interchangeable. Interchangeability shall not require alternation or
modification.
